Two mirrored waves interlacing around an axis

What is harmonious movement education?A practice for moving better, within your own possibilities.

Not gymnastics, not therapy, not training. It is the work that makes all of your body’s expressive possibilities available, instead of the single one you use out of habit. In Italian we call it educazione al movimento armonico.

The word

Harmonious means two voices.

In music, harmony does not exist in a single note: two must sound, and they must sound together. A body is harmonious in the same sense — when both sides are singing, and neither is reduced to silent accompaniment.

It also means elegant, and not by accident: a body with all its possibilities available stops compensating, and a movement that need not correct itself while it happens looks graceful from the outside. Elegance is not the starting point — it is what shows when nothing inside is pulling anymore.

If a negation helps, it is this one: harmonious does not mean lopsided. A body that always starts from the same side sings with one voice, and it shows from the outside even when the person moving cannot feel it.

And the possibilities are not two. From the three choices the body makes before every gesture, eight configurations arise: habit uses almost always the same one. The eight configurations →

On the left one voice alone, on the right two voices answering each other
The same body: on the left one part carries the gesture, on the right the two answer each other — and the gesture has more roads.

It doesn’t teach a correct way to move.
It teaches you to move with every way you have.

Why a new name

The existing words didn’t fit.

Gymnastics implies repetition and exercise: here nothing is performed, you learn to notice. Therapy presupposes damage to be treated: nothing here is broken, there is a habit that formed on its own. Training means adding capacity to what you already do: here we remove what keeps half of you from taking part.

A harmonious body moves well.
Not because it is correct: because it is free.

To be clear

How it differs from what you already know.

Postural training
Corrects a shape towards a right model. Nothing is corrected here: the range of what you can do widens, and the shape changes by itself once it is no longer needed.
Physiotherapy
Addresses damage or pain, with a diagnosis. This is educational work addressed to people who are well, and it replaces neither doctor nor physiotherapist.
Coaching and conditioning
Makes the gesture you already own stronger. Here the object is the gesture you don’t own, and the question is not how much you can but how many roads you have.
Yoga and somatic practices
Cultivate attention to the body as a whole. This shares the approach but has one precise, testable object: laterality — which side movement starts from, and whether that starting point can be reversed.
Training the weak side
The footballer who spends two seasons kicking only with the left builds what wasn’t there: it works, but it is slow and it assumes something is missing on that side. Here we first ask whether that side is truly unable, or only held down.

Where it comes from

An old practice and a stated line of research.

The work grows out of more than ten years of Yang-style Taiji, where two sides alternating is the ground of the practice, and out of an experimental philosophy thesis on the body and laterality.

Not theory off the cuff: the hypotheses are written down, stated and falsifiable, with a public DOI. The research, with the documents → · The full story →

Frequently asked

Before you ask

Is harmonious movement education a therapy?

No. It is education: you learn to notice how you move and to be able to move otherwise. It does not treat anything and does not replace your doctor or physiotherapist.

Does harmonious just mean moving gracefully?

Partly. Harmonious is meant first in the musical sense — harmony exists between two voices — but elegance is its practical consequence: a body that no longer has to compensate moves better, and it shows. What harmonious does not mean is lopsided.

Do I need to be fit or flexible?

No. It starts with walking, the gesture you perform most often and think about least.

How is it different from training your weak side?

Training the weak side adds capacity to a part that has little. Here we first ask why the other side cannot let go: often the side that looks incapable is simply held down by a tension nobody is asking for anymore.
